Ways You Can Prevent Skin Cancer

Ways You Can Prevent Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis, and it's not even close.

In fact, the American Cancer Society reports that more U.S. citizens contract skin cancer than all other forms of cancer combined. According to their annual report, one in five people will develop cancer before turning 70 years old. And, at least two Americans die from skin cancer every hour.

While this paints a pretty bleak picture, there is some good news. Atlanta Center for Dermatological Diseases knows that skin cancer is preventable. With locations in Roswell, Alpharetta, Cumming, and Sandy Springs, GA, their experienced doctors reduce the risk of skin cancer by offering early detection and proactive advice.

With this in mind, Atlanta Center for Dermatological Diseases shares seven tips for preventing skin cancer.

Be Prepared in All Weather

Skin cancer isn't restricted to hot, summer days. Water, snow, cement, and sand can be even more dangerous. These surfaces reflect damaging UV rays, increasing the likelihood of sunburn. Use extra caution.

Seek Shade

Even in wintery weather or on cloudy days, the sun is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. During this window, seek shade and avoid direct exposure.

Apply Sunscreen

Regardless of the weather, don't leave home without proper protection. A minimum of SPF 30 should be used for the entire year. Sunscreen also needs to be reapplied at least every two hours.

Wear Protective Clothing

Your clothing should offer some UV coverage too. Long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover your arms and legs are ideal. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are a must too. Cover as much of your face, head, neck, and ears as possible.

Nix Indoor Tanning

That bronzed tan you desire actually isn't very healthy. Tanning beds are especially problematic. The UV rays emitted from tanning beds can be 10 to 15 times higher than the sun's peak intensity.

Routine Checks

Skin cancer in Roswell, Alpharetta, Cumming, and Sandy Springs, GA, can be avoided altogether with routine check-ups. Between visits with your doctor, check your skin on your own regularly. If you notice any changes, consult a physician immediately.
